Burning Cane

This morning I woke from a call from my mom. She was in tears. Her friend and coworker’s oldest son died in a motorcycle accident during the middle of the night. He was 21 years old. She just called to say she loved me.
I couldn’t help but think of home – growing up in a small town where everyone knew everyone. At times I didn’t know if it was a blessing or a curse, especially at times like these, when someone was taken way too soon. My heart breaks for the family.
So, I had a burning in my own heart when I painted this picture of burning sugarcane. Sugarcane surrounds my small town in South Florida and I always enjoyed watching the cane burn before it was harvested. I just wish sweet Cameron had the chance to watch it burn again.

This piece was definitely made with my husband in mind. I love him so much, even though our music choices don’t always match.

Tiki Inspiration
Hawaii has to be one of the most beautiful and inspiring places on the planet, and this piece was definitely inspired by it. I’ve always had a fascination with tiki gods, even before my Hawaiian vacation. There’s something special and unique about their faces. Every carved figure has an expression. I can see why the Hawaiian culture embraces them.
