Inspired by this week’s Illustration Friday challenge, I introduce to you the Whiskers Trio! I’ve been wanting to illustrate some cats for awhile now and when I saw the topic was “Whiskers,” I knew now was the time, and of course, they had to have mustaches. After all it is Movember!

I found an image of a “red flower” and used it as a reference for this piece. I’m pretty pleased with the way it turned out. I like the painterly background, which really shows off the natural appearance of watercolors. However, I have no clue what kind of flower this is. A friend of mine thought it may be an azalea, and I see the resemblance, but really don’t have a clue. Do any of you know?

I can’t write this post without acknowledging today’s holiday – Thanksgiving! I’m thankful for a lot of things (family, friends, a job I love, a beautiful home, etc, etc.) but this year I have one more thing to add to the list – I am so thankful to have found a rekindled passion…painting! I have found this year so rewarding. I reconnected with art, started this blog, opened up an Etsy store, and to my surprise, I’ve even sold several paintings. What a wonderful year…so much to be thankful for!

I spent a wonderful weekend in South Florida visiting my parents. My husband had his annual “brothers weekend” so my sister-in-law and I decided we would back up my two boys and two dogs and make the three hour trek to Clewiston. We had an amazing time! We went to the nearby indian reservation and had a true redneck weekend, riding swamp buggies and going on airboat rides. But one of my favorite days was spent painting. This little race car driver was inspired by this week’s Illustration Friday Challenge topic: Zoom I started working on this illustration while waiting for the paint to dry on other pieces. Here’s a picture of my sister-in-law, Darby and I painting flowers – my flowers are still a work in progress.

This illustration was created for this week’s Illustration Friday challenge: “Tree.” I love trees – all types. When I found out that this week’s challenge was tree, I had a tough time choosing which kind of tree to draw. One thing I knew was that I wanted it to be loved (and hugged) and for it to be hugging the subject right back.

This is another playful illustration with a watercolor/pen and ink combo. I tried drawing it with pen first, only to find that when I added the paint, the ink bled. *UGH! So I redrew it in pencil this time, added the paint and then added pen and ink at the end.

Beautiful Kauai

Tim and Dyionna’s Paradise

This painting was inspired by a photo of the Kauai, Hawaii coastline that my brother and sister-in-law took while visiting earlier this year. Tim and Dyionna are not only awesome siblings, they are our back door neighbors. While some people may question if married adult siblings can live so close in peace, it’s pretty awesome. While we may enjoy our space every now and then, the times that we spend together on random weeknights (and weekends with extended family) are near and dear to my heart. I know one day I will look back on this time and cherish the memories we’ve created together.

I plan to give this painting to them for a very delayed birthday present – I hope they love it!

I’m feeling a little uneasy tonight, partially because I am anticipating the Obama/Romney election results. I’m sure both candidates feel like this little ballerina right now – excited but scared not knowing if the audience will approve of them. I would hate to be in their shoes right now. This painting was inspired by this week’s Illustration Friday Challenge: “Shy.”

St. Simon’s Shells

This whimsical painting was drawn/painted while vacationing in St. Simons Island, Georgia with my family earlier this year. My mom collected some shells on the beach and when we came back to our condo I spent the afternoon drawing with my little boys (2 and 4). I added the pen and ink this weekend. I’ve been exploring more with pen and ink…pulling out some loosely styled pieces and adding to them. What do you think?

This was a forgotten watercolor painting in progress that has been sitting in my closet for months. I wasn’t happy with the direction it was going so I didn’t feel like completing it. I’ve always been a doodler so I decided to try something new and added a pen and ink element to my forgotten painting.

I really like pen and ink art. I think I’ll be experimenting with this this medium more in the future.

Ari’s Room

Mural with Acrylic Paint

I’m honored to have been asked to add a personal touch to this sweet nursery. I painted the mural on the wall and the letters were painted by each person that attended Ari’s baby shower. I love the colors and the educational characteristics of this room – what a lucky kid. You can tell his parents love him so much already!

The parents had a very specific idea of what they wanted. Before I got started, they gave me a basic sketch of an owl, his name, and a tree with multicolored leaves that included specific adjectives (in English and Spanish) selected to describe their baby-to-be.

Ari is expected to arrive in a month and I can’t wait for him to see his new room.
