Jasmine’s Haven

GIFT

My 13 year old niece Jasmine asked me to paint a painting for her for her birthday, which is just around the corner. She is a gifted writer. When I asked her what she wanted she replied with this:

“The sun is hidden behind thick, grey storm clouds, that threaten to pour down on paradise. You smile as you take in your surroundings. Pine trees surround you on all sides, blowing in the stormy wind. You peer down at the ground and notice a peculiar, lilac flower, broken from the stem, peeping out from underneath the toe of your boot. You bend, and pick up the misplaced flower and begin to walk aimlessly, trying to find the birth place of this flower. Without your knowledge, you break through a small amount of bushes, and you gasp at the amazing sight.

There is a clearing, filled with the mysterious looking flower, that is the center of a pine tree dome. The grey clouds add to the magnificent effect of the dome, almost as if it is the lid of a beautiful trap. You take more steps until you reach the center, and you bask in what you have found to be your personal heaven.”

Ha! I love that girl. I’ve to to be honest, I was taken aback a little by this request. I didn’t know where to start. But I was totally inspired by her words. I hope her dedication to writing continues to grow – what an inspiration!

Sojourning

There are fewer things that make me happier than the beach. If you know me well, you know it’s my favorite thing to paint. When visiting the islands this summer, one of my favorite stops was Grand Turk. The water was turquoise, the sand was white, and they had the most beautiful palm tree lined shores. I painted this piece from a reference photo that I took while visiting the island. I added in the woman in the small beach shack – I pictured her on the island as if it were desolate and she was waiting for her sailor to return from a long trip at sea. But she can’t wait forever! Hence the title “Sojourning.” I hope you like this piece! 🙂

“The Heat is On” Exhibit – City Arts Factory

I’m very excited and honored to be a part of “The Heat is On” exhibit at City Arts Factory in Downtown Orlando. I’ll have the four pieces pictured in the exhibit, which will run from August 15th – September 13th. All four pieces are available for purchase. This is the first time I have had pieces of artwork in an official gallery so this is quite the milestone for me.

The opening of the exhibit will be on Thursday, August 15th from 6-9pm. I hope you’ll stop by to see all of the beautiful pieces on display.

I returned from a wonderful East Caribbean vacation with my husband, Alex on Saturday. We took a cruise to Nassau, San Juan, St. Thomas, and Grand Turk. We had an amazing time. We left our boys with my parents and stayed very busy with sight seeing. It was a great way to celebrate our 10 year anniversary! Needless to say, I really missed my kids and painting but I came back with lots of inspiration.

One of my favorite trees that is native to the caribbean islands is the flamboyant tree. They are beautiful! I decided to paint one in a graphic style (above). I used the reference photo below, which Alex took with his cell phone. Obviously, I used an artistic license to make the scene more appealing. I’m thankful I was able to squeeze in some painting time before heading back to work tomorrow. Yay!

Dragonfly

As soon as I wrapped up my butterfly painting, a friend of mine suggested a dragonfly and I jumped on it. To be perfectly honest, I don’t know why haven’t painted one yet. I love dragonflies. As a child growing up in south Florida, I always loved seeing them fly around. I know they are pesky bugs but there is something special about those big fluttery wings. Don’t you agree?

This is a continuation of a series of paintings that I started a few months ago, with a geometric tan background. I’ve been wanting to paint butterflies ever since going to the zoo with my son for his fifth birthday. We went though an exhibit with beautiful butterflies. Here’s a shot that I took while visiting.

While my butterflies don’t look exactly like the ones in the photo, I was definitely inspired by them. I love the meaning behind butterflies. They are a symbol of hope. I’m thinking of a friend tonight that is in the hospital with her mom, who just underwent a serious surgery. I am praying for her tonight and hope these butterflies bring her peace and hope.

A friend of mine from work is having her first child – a baby boy. I wanted to paint her something and tried to combine all of her interests into one painting. She likes teddy bears and crowns, is using a nautical theme in the baby’s room, wears the cutest, trendies glasses, and LOVES tattoos and cupcakes…so here’s Jessica’s bear. I hope she loves it!

Lush Life – Guitar 2

This is the third painting from my Lush Life series. It’s a little darker than the rest but I think I like that about it. What do you guys think? These paintings are MUCH larger than my usual artwork, which is taking me longer to complete but they have been fun!
